"Systematic screening for congenital hypothyroidism"
Introduction:
Neonatal thyroid screening is a monitoring tool for the early detection and therapy of infants affected by transient and permanent hypothyroidism. Since this procedure is important for evaluation of population with high risk, thus, we investigated the neonatal TSH screening in Razavi khorasan.
Methods:
The heel blood samples of 59436 neonates born during six months (April – October) were collected onto filler paper the TSH was assayed by EIA and a value > 5 mU/l was considered as Cut-off for rechecking of the thyroid factors (serum TSH and T4).
Results:
The re-examinated frequency in the studied population was 3.6%. Data showed the higher frequencies in Nishaboor (60.9%), kalat (7%), Mahvelat (5.8%), khaff(5.4%) ,Ferdows(5%), Roshtkhar(4.6%), Faryman (4.6%) and Taybad (4.1%) as Compared with the other cities within the province. We determined hypothyroidism frequency 6.31% among the re-examinated neonates.
Conclusion:
On the basis of WHO/UNICEF /ICCIDD, the neonatal TSH frequency above 5mU/L blood higher than 3% indicates Iodine deficiency (ID) in the studied population |
